The bottom panel of table 4.6 investigates the relationships between wealth share of the elite in 1860 and political competition when controls were included for initial conditions. The first column shows that over the period 1866–2000 wealth share of the elite in 1860 was strongly positively related to state political competition. A 10 percent increase in wealth share was associated with a three-point increase in the state Ranney index—which is surprising given that the literature has suggested that wealth concentration is negatively related to political competition. In the shorter periods, wealth share was always positively related to political competition. In four of the seven periods, the relationship between wealth and political competition was statistically significant. States with a higher share of wealth held by the elites had higher political competition during periods spanning 1880–1958.

Given the limited theoretical grounding for the importance of wealth in the United States and its positive sign, which is contrary to the international literature, the remaining discussion focuses on occupational homogeneity of the elite.
